The Sunday after Thanksgiving Sunday, which is November 29th, will be the first Sunday in Advent, a season of expectation that culminates in the celebration of the birth of our Messiah. Advent readings begin on a very sober note, emphasizing humanity's need for a Savior. As the readings progress, words of hope are brought forward as the Messiah is promised. The story culminates in the arrival of Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh to dwell among us and save us from our sins.
The Advent sermon series this year is entitle "From Paradise to Promised Land: Christ in the Books of Moses." In each morning worship service, we will consider how Christ was prefigured and promised in Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy. The series will culminate on Christmas Eve, where we annually present the gospel to so many of our family, friends and neighbors who have not yet experienced the power of the gospel in their lives.
Advent at EP is special. The sanctuary is beautiful. The music is incredible. It is a joy to see different members of the congregation reading Scripture around the Advent candles before the service. each year the adult and children's Christmas programs encourage us in their own unique ways. Last year, the fellowship at our Christmas Eve service was rich, and the atmosphere was truly stunning. Once again we will have wassail and carols by the Foundry Strings in the Narthex before the service. As we look around the world at our brothers and sisters suffering for their faith, let us not take for granted these rich blessings. One way to preserve them is observe them. Make every effort to attend these special celebrations and to invite others as well. You will be glad that you did!
