Prayer Pointers from Psalm 86

Prayer Pointers from Pastor Knott Below are some items for prayer in response to Psalm 86, this past Sunday's text.  Posting these "prayer pointers" is a practice we'll continue for the entire summer as we focus on communion with God using the Psalms.  The purpose of the prayers below is to get us in the habit of praying the Psalms and to get us praying for specific things we need God to do in us and through us as a congregation.  While there's no one way to use these prayers, here are some suggestions: take one of these prayers and make it your own as a response to your Bible reading tomorrow morning.  Take another the next day, another the next.  Notice that each prayer is followed by an ellipsis with the idea that you continue in prayer in your own words.  If you're the head of household, aim to read a passage of scripture with your family and then begin to pray these prayers as a family at least every other day this week.  For many this will be a supplement to their own regular habits of Bible reading and prayer.  For many others this will be a great beginning to a life long practice of communing with God in prayer.  Whether supplement or a good start, there is no telling what God will do if we will commit ourselves to seeking His face together in prayer not just on Sunday mornings but throughout the week.

Psalm 86

(from v.4) Father, please renew our joy in worshiping Christ. Make our corporate worship to come from the joy and love you've placed in our hearts because of Christ.  Strengthen our voices and open our mouths to freely and joyfully give you the praise, honor, and glory that belong to you.  May those who do not yet trust in you come to worship this Sunday and confess, "surely God is here!"  May we who trust in you so delight in giving you praise that we can not wait to be gathered as your people next Lord's day.  Cause us to delight in corporate worship and treasure the sweet communion we have with you and one another there...

(from v.9) Father, please renew our joy in sharing Christ. Give us quiet confidence in knowing that not only our family members, neighbors, co-workers, and friends, but entire nations come to worship you when you call them.  Open our mouths to declare the great and glorious things you have done, and will do, in Christ.  Give us such joy in believing that we can not help but share what you have done for us in Christ.  Put people in our paths today and everyday of this week that need to hear the gospel we have received.  Give us words to speak.  Cause our faith to rise and our fears to abate.  Use me and use our church to bring the nations to worship you.  Fill our pews with worshipers of the risen King... (from v. 11) Father, please renew our joy in learning your ways and walking in your truth. Give us an insatiable thirst for you in your Word.  Increase our hunger for the Word, as individuals and as the church.  Renew our conviction that your word is living and active.  Jesus, cause your word to burn within our hearts as you give us faith to believe in what you've revealed.  Spirit please enable us to not only believe the gospel, but to believe every word, every promise, every truth, every thing revealed to us in your Word.  Father, make us not only glad hearers of your word, but a congregation filled with glad doers of your word.  Make us that holy and righteous bride you have purchased us to be by washing us with your Word...
